Back in the early 90s, Jennie Livingston’s documentary about the New York underground drag balls, Paris is Burning, was picked up by a (then) small distributor called Miramax. Some canny marketing made it a worldwide hit, but while Miramax made a killing, nothing changed for the participants in the film. They continued to dress up, to join Houses, to Vogue, to be poor and, in more than a few cases, to die of AIDS and be replaced by new ‘family’ members.
Here, in How Do I Look?, filmed by director Wolfgang Busch over a ten year period, the story of the queer black underground drag ball scene lives on, with talent, colour, imagination - and Love.
